Red Dye in Kerosene

Dear friends,

The kerosene (K-1) dye issue has arrived officially as of July 1, 1998. Only K-1 Fuel with the red dye is available without the extra Federal transportation taxes. Therefore, you will be using this "new" product in your Kerosene heating products, unless you are willing to pay the extra 24 cent tax.
The use of dyed K-1 should not affect the operation of direct-vent or wick fed heaters. Be aware: the appearance of the wick may change due to the red color in the fuel. It is too soon to know if there will be any long term problems. It is a fact that petroleum companies are continuing to test "synthetic" fuel substitutes for K-1. We will let you know of any technology, which will benefit you.
We will all have to rely on fuel dealers assurances not to compromise the established specifications of K-1 Kerosene, since impurities in the fuel will be difficult to detect.
Please contact me with any specific information you may have regarding supply of Kerosene in your area. We need to work together to lessen the down side affects of this bad legislation.

We have received several letters from people saying they are using the new red kerosene and are experiencing no problems, while others write in and are very displeased with the new fuel. Comments range from bad odors to gummed up wicks and stuck wick adjusters.
